Bengal History

The Bengal cat is a domesticated cat breed that was created from hybrids of domestic cats, and with the Asian leopard cat.

While the breed crossings began many years ago, the actual Bengal species wasn’t established until the 1970s when Jean Mill bred the Asian leopard cat hybrids with domestic cat breeds. Essentially her goal was to produce a breed that took on the exotic appearance of the Asian leopard cat, but with the personality of a loving domestic house cat.

Today, Bengal kittens are bred from other Bengals and they are several generations removed from their exotic ancestors. Bengals are now considered one of the most expensive cat breeds.

The Bengal is an average to large-sized, spotted cat.  Bengals are long, lean and athletic. Bengals are larger than the average house cat because of their muscular bodies. Breeders in recent years have begun selective breeding to breed a Bengal cat closer in size to the original Asian leopard cat. Our Queen Indira has a lot of Asian Leopard cat features!
